If you are craving something sweet but healthy that should also keep your blood sugar levels under control, go and grab few dates. They are sugary sweet but packed with nutrients that your body needs.
Dates not only satiate but deliver a host of health benefits. They can be eaten fresh, dried, or blended into recipes making them a versatile superfood.
Dates are a sustainable food for the future as they grow in harsh arid regions and are essential for the people’s food source and security.
Rich in glucose, fructose, and sucrose, dates provide quick and sustained energy. The energy boost from dates is balanced, preventing sudden crashes, which usually happens with refined sugar. They also contain essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron, alongside B‑complex vitamins and dietary fiber.
The health benefits of dates range from improving gut health to heart health to blood sugar regulation. Nutritionist Deepsikha Jain highlights in her Instagram post that consuming dates daily can give many health benefits.
Blood Sugar Level
According to Jain, eating dates will have a positive impact on your blood sugar level and may also help you bring them down because they belong to the low glycemic index group of fruits, so they will not spike your blood sugar so fast.
Fiber slows sugar absorption, helping maintain stable blood glucose levels. Studies have found that date extracts may even have antidiabetic properties, which makes them a safer sweet dessert for those managing blood sugar.
Heart Health
Dates will improve your lipid profile, which means it will help reduce cholesterol and also improve heart health as it is super rich in fiber and antioxidants, says Jain.
Dates are rich in antioxidants, especially polyphenols, which help reduce oxidative stress linked to heart disease. Research shows that extracts from certain varieties like Ajwa dates can lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) protect arteries, and improve heart function. Their potassium and magnesium content also supports healthy blood pressure regulation.
Weight Management
According to Jain, eating dates as snack will also help you lose weight because of fiber present in it and it will also have less impact on sugar level, which will keep you full longer and hence reducing any cravings ahead.
Anti-ageing Properties
Dates are also full of phytohormones (plant hormones), which help plants grow and perpetuate. Experts believe that phytohormones in dates may also have anti-aging benefits for your skin.
In a small study, researchers made a skin cream with 5% date palm kernel extract and middle-aged women were asked to apply the cream around their eyes twice daily for five weeks. After five weeks, there was reduction in the size and depth of wrinkles, the study found and warrants further research in this.”
