The festival is celebrated in a unique way in different regions of India. The most iconic and memorable Holi celebration takes place in Mathura and Vrindavan where it is played for weeks. It is also known as “Lathmar Holi” in Barsana (Radha’s village) and “Phoolon Wali Holi” in Banke Bihari temple. In Jaipur and Udaipur, it is known as “Royal Holi”. In West Bengal, it is known as Dol Jatra.

Holi Significance

There are two stories behind the celebration of Holi Festival. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Krishna’s complexion was dark while Radha was fair skinned. It worried the lord whether Radha would accept him or not. When he conveyed his concern to his mother Yashoda, she playfully suggested that he colour Radha’s face with gulal to remove the differences of colour. Krishna followed her mother’s advice and the playful act turned out to be inspiration behind the festival.

Another popular story revolves around King Hiranyakashipu, his son Prahlad, and the king’s sister Holika. The King was blessed with a boon that made him almost invincible and he sought to be worshipped. But, his son Prahlad was a big devotee of Lord Vishni. It enraged the king and he asked his sister Holika to sit on a burning pyre with Prahlad in her lap. She was also blessed with a boon that fire will not cause her any harm. But, divine intervention saved Prahlad and Holika perished in the flames. The story symbolizes the victory of good over evil and led to the celebration of Holika Dahan, observed a day before Holi.
