Summary

Many myths about cancer create fear and confusion, often delaying treatment or fuelling stigma. Common misconceptions include the belief that cancer is always fatal, that sugar feeds cancer, or that biopsies and surgery cause it to spread. Other myths suggest cancer is contagious, exposure to air worsens tumors, or that cell phones and herbal remedies are responsible. In reality, cancer is treatable, not contagious, and requires evidence‑based medical care.

Cancer itself carries an emotional burden, and misinformation can make that burden much heavier. There are many certain popular myths about the causes of cancer or how it spreads from one to another.

We all are aware that cancer affects millions of people every year and has associated with pain, suffering, and loss. And believing in myths can have serious consequences. These myths fuel fear and stigma, therefore, making it difficult for patients to seek support.

Let’s have a look at some myths surrounding cancer:

1. Cancer Is A Death Sentence

One of the oldest and most talked myth about cancer is that if you are diagnosed with cancer, then your survival chances become very low. As per a report published in National Cancer Institute, “five-year survival rates for some cancers, such as breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers, now are 90 percent or better. The 5-year survival rate for all cancers combined is currently about 69 percent”.

Advances in cancer detection and treatment have increased survival rates for most common types of cancer.

2. Is Cancer Contagious?

In general, no. Cancer is not a contagious illness and does not spread directly from one person to another. The only rare circumstance in which cancer cells may transfer between individuals is through organ or tissue transplantation.

In some people, cancers may be caused by certain viruses (some types of human papillomavirus, or HPV, for example) and bacteria (such as Helicobacter pylori).

3. Artificial Sweeteners, Preservatives Cause Cancer

Researchers have found no evidence that artificial sweeteners, flavours, colours and food additives cause cancer in humans.

As per a report published in Mayo Clinic, “the misconception may be based in part on a misunderstanding of positron emission tomography (PET) scans. These scans use a small amount of radioactive tracer that's usually a form of glucose. All tissues in your body absorb some of this tracer. But tissues that are using more energy, such as cancer cells, absorb greater amounts. For this reason, some people mistakenly believe that cancer cells grow faster on sugar. But this isn't true.”

4. Mobile Phones And Power Lines Cause cancer

Despite widespread concern, scientific studies have not found conclusive evidence linking cell phone use or living near power lines to cancer. Research continues, but so far, no clear connection has been established.

It is important to rely on credible scientific findings rather than speculation.

5. Herbal Remedies Can Cure Cancer

No herbal products have been scientifically proven to be effective in treatment of cancer, although some studies suggest that complementary therapies, which include some herbs may help cancer patients to cope with the side effects of its treatment.

6. Microwaving Food in Plastic Containers Cause Cancer

There are plastic containers which are labelled as safe for use in the microwave. Though, not all plastic containers are meant for use in the microwave. Some containers that don’t have a microwave-safe label may melt or leak chemicals into your food.

By spreading accurate information, we empower individuals to make informed choices, encourage early detection, and reduce unnecessary anxiety. Cancer is a complex disease, but it is not the hopeless battle many imagine. Early detection, healthy lifestyle choices, and evidence-based medical treatment save lives every day.
