We often consume fruits as they offer the necessary minerals and vitamins. When we feel hungry we pair fruits with milk without realizing the impact on our gut health. According to Ayurveda, combination of certain fruits with milk can support the digestion while the reverse impact may occur with other fruits. Recently, renowned Ayurveda health coach Dimple Jangda took to her Instagram account and explained how the combination of apples with milk will impact your digestion and gut health. Apple is rich source of fibre, vitamin C, and antioxidants that can offer significant health benefits like improved heart health, weight management and better immunity. On the other hand, milk is packed with vital protein, calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and B12. Check key details pertaining to the combination of milk and apple:

Should You Consume Apple Milkshake?

When combined with apple, the presence of citric and malic acids in apple can speed up the curdling of milk. This undigested residue will not be digested, absorbed, or assimilated easily. The simple sugars present in apple will start acting on the milk, enter your body’s small intestine, and may cause bloating, gas, and long-term indigestion issues.

You may find apple milkshake comforting initially, but consuming the wrong food combination of apple and milk can trigger delay in gastric emptying, slow the digestion, bring down metabolism, and enhance mucus production. The wrong food combination may also cause rashes, cough, sinus issues, allergies, and cold, added Dimple Jangda.

It is worth noting that apple requires less time for digestion because of its light nature. Apple also starts breaking down in your mouth due to salivary amylase. On the other hand, milk contains lactase and casein, complex animal-based proteins that need more time in to stomach and intestine to digest and break down. Meanwhile, milk tends to react with hydrochloric acid in the stomach and creates a semi-solid substance due to the curdling process, allowing it to stay in the gut longer for slow protein breakdown, revealed Dimple Jangda.

Leading Ayurvedic practitioner Dr Priya Sharma Said, “in Ayurveda, combining apples with milk is generally considered incompatible for digestion. Apples, being a juicy fruit, are believed to have a cooling effect, while milk is heavy and cooling as well, which can lead to a dampening of digestive fire (Agni). This combination may cause discomfort, bloating, or the formation of toxins (Ama) in the body, especially for those with Vata or Kapha imbalances,” according to Ask Ayurveda.

It is ideally better to avoid pairing milk with fruits altogether as per the Ayurvedic dietary practices. However, if you are keen to combine fruits with milk, you can combine banana or mango as these fruits re dense and suitable for milk’s digestive properties, added Dr. Priya.
