In Ayurveda this is caused due to pitta imbalance, excessive fire element of the body, which causes your digestive fire, your stomach acids to become aggravated. This starts burning your stomach walls and starts pushing your stomach acids into the esophagus, leading to that burning sensation and reflux symptom. 1

Foods That Trigger Acidity

Stay Away From Sour, Salty Pungent, And Oily Foods: Dimple Jangda urged to refrain from consuming “sour, salty, pungent, and oily foods. Sour foods like lemon, lime, orange, tomato, salty foods and salty snacks. Pungent vegetables like onions, garlic, tomatoes, nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, eggplant. These will only aggravate your acidity symptoms. Also, stay away from soya sauce and soya based products at this point in time. Meat and seafood that are acidic in nature.”

And also fermented foods like kombucha, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, idli dosa batter made overnight. You think you’re feeding your good gut bacteria, but it’s actually going to aggravate the stomach heat. The stomach heat will cause the good bacteria to multiply even faster, leading to a burning sensation and fermentation in your gut. Stay away from fermented foods till your acidity comes down, added Jangda.

The Ayurveda expert recommended some foods that you can consume to get relief from frequent acidity.

  • She urged to “consume foods that are bitter in nature, astringent, sweet in nature. Have a lot of sweet fruits in your diet like apple, berries, cherries, mangoes that are sweetened and ripe. This will help in reducing the burning sensation.

  • Have bitter vegetables in your diet along with leafy green vegetables. You can have celery, cucumber, zucchini, asparagus, beans, peas, sweet potato, small amount of spinach, and kale as well. This will help in reducing the pitta imbalance and the burning sensation.

  • You can also have cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage as they will keep your digestive fire active and engaged.

  • She urged to have a “lot of mild foods and dry foods in your diet. Millets are great. Barnyard millet, kodo millet, finger millet, and little millet. These are jowar, makai, ragi, and amaranth. These will help in reducing the body heat.

  • The health expert suggested to “stay away from wheat and gluten for some time. You can have rice in your diet. You can have white rice, red rice, and black rice. You can reduce your intake of brown rice. These are all cooling foods.

  • Dimple recommended to add a plate of cucumber with less salt or may be cumin powder instead to immediately calm down the pitta imbalance and burning sensation.  

  • “Take one teaspoon of sabja seeds, soak it in a glass of water. Sabja seeds are also called as tukmaria seeds or sweet basil seeds. It is not the same as chia seeds but it looks similar. It swells up into a jelly like substance and add a consistency. And, when you drink this, you don’t have to chew the seeds. It goes straight into your belly, holds all that moisture and water and hydration, thus reducing the temperature of your stomach and making it more alkaline and less acidic,” said Jangda.

  • You can also have rose syrup made from rose petals. You can either put it either in cruelty free dairy based milk, coconut milk, or almond milk, and drink it empty stomach. Make sure the milk is cool or room temperature not hot. This will reduce your acidity immediately, concluded the Ayurveda expert.
