Summary

The belief that drinking water during meals dilutes stomach acid and harms digestion is a myth. Studies show water helps digestion and may even aid weight loss when consumed before meals. ‘Don't drink water while you eat, you'll ruin your digestion.’ You would have heard this piece of advice at family dinners, at the office, and via WhatsApp. But does this have any merit? Does the water dilute your stomach acid, slowing down digestion?

Does Water Dilute Stomach Acid?

The most common reason people give for not drinking water with meals is that it will dilute the stomach acid that the body uses to digest the food it consumes. This is the most logical of the arguments against drinking water with meals. But the human body simply doesn't work this way.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no evidence that drinking water with or after a meal will weaken the digestive juices that the body uses to digest the food that is consumed.

The human stomach is not a container full of stomach acid that is waiting to be diluted. The human stomach is a constantly functioning body part that is always producing the exact amount of acid that is needed to digest the food that is consumed.

What Research Says

The timing of water consumption, especially with regard to meals, seems to have some impact, especially on weight loss.

In a study published by researchers from the University of Birmingham in the journal Obesity, showed that adults who consumed 500 ml of water 30 minutes before each main meal lost 1.3 kg more over 12 weeks than those who didn’t consume water before meals. 1

Furthermore, those who consumed it before all three meals lost an impressive 4.3 kg over 12 weeks.

In another study published in 2024, researchers found that replacing sugary drinks with water at mealtimes was associated with weight loss and health benefits.2

So, when is the best time to drink water?

Before the meal
The best time to consume water is by drinking a glass of water 20 to 30 minutes prior to the meal.

During the meal
Sipping on water during your meal is also perfectly fine, but chugging is certainly not advised. Water softens the food that you’re eating and will help push it through the digestive tract.

After the meal
Drinking water after your meal is also perfectly fine and recommended.

Who Should Avoid Drinking Water with Meals?

People with gastrointestinal issues like GERD should avoid drinking water during meals because it can worsen their reflux symptoms.
People who have undergone gastric surgery feel full when they drink water with their meals. Such people can have their water before or after meals.

It is better to distribute water consumption evenly throughout the day than drinking excessive amounts of water only during meal times.

The idea of drinking water with your meals resulting in damaged digestion is not at all true. Experts confirm that drinking water helps with digestion, and if anything, drinking water with your meals is one of the best habits you should cultivate for your health and digestive system.

So, the next time someone asks you to put down your glass of water at the dinner table, go ahead and take a sip.
