As mercury starts plummeting and days begin to get shorter, there is surge in infections because winter tends to bring a dip in energy levels also. Recently, medical professional Dr Poorna Prajna took to his Instagram account and left many stunned with this statement, “Cold doesn’t come from cold water. It comes from viruses. The temperatures make the symptoms feel worse. Science is simple, not emotional”.
Dr Rituja Ugalmugale, consultant in internal medicine at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai echoed the similar views saying that cold itself does not cause infections and body reacts to changes in temperature. “That’s where viruses come in,” added Dr Ugalmugle.
“Viruses, mainly rhinoviruses, cause a cold. Cold water, AC, rain, or chilly environments don’t create viruses in the body. They can make existing symptoms feel worse. A dry nose or throat from cold air can increase discomfort, but it doesn’t cause the infection,” he told The Indian Express
Wash Hands: Washing hands frequently will help in preventing a cold as cold viruses mainly spread via touching school desks, door handles, refrigerator handles, mobile phones, and shaking hands. It is significant to wash hands with soap and lukewarm water for nearly 20 seconds as often as possible. The easy habit will go a long way in killing germs before they enter your body.
Keep Your Body Warm: When the body gets exposed to colder winds, your immunity may become less active. It is important to wear layers of warm clothes especially when stepping outside. You must cover the ears, neck, and feet adequately. Drinking warm and healthy drinks such as soups, hot water, and herbal tea will help in keeping the body warmer.
Drink More Water: Staying hydrated is of paramount importance during winters as many people tend to drink less water during colder months. It helps the body fight infections effectively.
Eat Nutritious Food: When you eat nutritious food, it leads to stronger immune system that can protect from winter illnesses. It is significant to add Vitamin C rich diet such as amla or gooseberry, lemons, oranges, guava, etc.
Avoid Touching Face: Cold viruses may enter your body via eyes, nose, or mouth. You must not touch your face quite frequently, especially when you step outside or in school. If you have to touch face, you need to ensure that your hands are clean.
