It is of paramount significance to remain active during winters when most of the people tend to put on weight. During winters love for food rise sharply and people often gorge on fried food with heavy intake of tea or coffee to keep them warm and comfortable.

In such scenarios, workouts often get missed. During such time it is ideal to begin with home workouts to remain in shape and healthy. Below are some simple exercises that you may start with for burning off calories effectively and efficiently:

Squats: You can start your exercise routine with squats. It has emerged a useful lower-body exercise that can be beneficial for your calves muscles, hamstrings, quadriceps etc. It will also keep your core engaged.  The exercise has been effective in building huge strength in the legs, improves balance, boosts flexibility, increases calories burn, and improves posture. It can also improve bone density. Squats can also strengthen supporting muscles, bring down risk of injuries, and tone your lower body.

Planks: It is yet another effective exercise that can build your core strength and helps in improving posture. It helps in alleviating backache by stabilising your spine. According to Dr Pratima Sharma, Senior Consultant-Internal Medicine, Max Multi Specialty Centre, “Come winter, come weight gain. Are you also feeling so? May be because of the festival season, you may have eaten lot of sugary, sweet things and carbohydrates. Or perhaps due to the winter, you are not able to go out much may be because of the poor air quality or those chilly mornings and evenings. It could also be that your metabolism has slowed down, your cortisol and melatonin levels have changed."

So what do we do to avoid gaining too much of weight and stay active?

You can start keeping yourself adequately hydrated, include plenty of green leafy vegetables and soups in your meals. You have to increase your physical activity whether indoors or outdoors, whatever is possible. Avoid alcohol as much as possible, refrain from smoking. And, keep your food portions under control, take care of your health during this winter and avoid gaining too much weight to stay fit and healthy, added Pratima Sharma.
