Having inflammation in the liver can be very worse for your health and lead to so many complications so it’s important to look after your liver’s health and eat foods that support it. Nutritionist Deepsikha Jain shared 5 best foods that can improve liver health.
It is important to incorporate specific, nutrient-rich foods into your diet that can support liver’s natural detoxification process, alleviate inflammation, and support repair of liver cells. Foods such as black coffee, blueberries, amla, avocado, and turmeric are considered powerful superfoods that can improve liver health and manage fatty liver disease. Liver is one of the hardest-working organs in the human body.
It can filter harmful toxins, enhance digestion, regulate metabolism, and process nutrients efficiently. While the liver naturally detoxifies the body on its own, certain nutrient-rich foods may help support its function and protect it from damage.
According to a research published in National Library of Medicine, “Two or more serves of oily fish per week has a beneficial effect on lipids and may reduce hepatic steatosis, regular filtered unsweetened coffee is associated with reduced fibrosis severity in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and a handful of nuts per day improves liver function tests. Addition of avocado and olive oil to the diet is associated with weight loss and improved liver tests while moderate consumption of tea and red wine appears safe.” 1
Leading nutritionist Deepsikha Jain took to her Instagram account and highlighted the best foods for liver health. Sharing the post, the nutritionist said, “Having inflammation in the Liver can be very worse for your health and lead to so many complications so it’s important to look after your liver’s health and eat these foods.” 2
1. Black Coffee: The nutritionist said, “First is a cup of black coffee. Black coffee has caffeine and that has actually shown to reduce the progression of the liver disease hence reducing fatty liver.” Sipping black coffee has been associated with a reduced risk of fatty liver, fibrosis and cirrhosis.
When you opt for moderate consumption of black coffee, it helps in bringing down the risk of liver disease that may include some specific cancer. It also helps people with fatty liver disease. Black coffee can lower liver cancer risk.
2. Blueberries: “The next is going to be a cup of blueberries. Blueberries have anthocyanin that are highly anti-inflammatory which can actually again help reduce inflammation of the liver cells,” said Deepsikha.
The fruit is considered immensely nutritious. Blueberries are an excellent source of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins that give the fruit their deep blue colour. The presence of antioxidants in blueberries can protect liver cells from damage, supports brain health, and alleviates inflammation.
3. Amla: The nutritionist recommended consumption of two awla to support liver health. She said, “Eat two amlas daily because amla has vitamin C that can actually reduce the oxidative stress hence improving your fatty liver.” Rich in fiber, amla supports healthy bowel movements and relieves acidity, bloating, and constipation.
It also stimulates digestive enzymes, ensuring better nutrient absorption. Regular amla consumption can aid immunity, heart health, liver health, digestive health, skin health, eyes health, and weight management. It is packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants, fibre, Vitamin A, etc.
4. Avocados: They have “glutathione and glutathione has actually shown to improve the liver cell production and regeneration hence reducing fatty liver oxidation,” added the nutritionist. The fruit support your digestive system due to the presence of soluble and insoluble fibre that can ease digestion and prevent constipation.
Soluble fibre is a key prebiotic that can feed your good bacteria in the intestines while insoluble fibre allows waste to move via the intestines easily. Regular consumption improves nutrient uptake and decreases bloating significantly. Avocados contain fibre and plant compounds that help support beneficial gut bacteria. The combination of fibre and healthy fats in avocados can help improve satiety and reduce overeating.
5. Turmeric: Deepsikha recommended to pair turmeric with black pepper because these two combinations are highly anti-inflammatory that can help reduce inflammation hence preventing fatty liver.
Turmeric, especially its active compound curcumin, may help manage non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by decreasing liver fat accumulation, reducing inflammation, and improving liver enzyme levels (ALT/AST). 500–1000 mg of curcumin daily can enhance liver health and insulin sensitivity when paired with a balanced diet and exercise. As a powerful antioxidant, turmeric decreases inflammation and protects the liver from damage caused by free radicals.
