In a big relief for India's poultry sector, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) declared eggs available all over India safe for human consumption and called the cancer claims baseless. According to FSSAI, these claims are misleading, scientifically baseless, and cause needless fears among consumers.
The food safety regulator issued the clarification after extensive debate on social media and digital media triggered by recent reports and videos claiming that a sample from a leading egg brand tested positive for AOZ, a metabolite linked with nitrofuran antibiotics that has reportedly been labelled as potentially carcinogenic.
Reacting to the claims, the food safety regulator stated that these claims are not supported scientifically. The regulator insisted that nitrofuran antibiotics use is totally forbidden in the country at all stages of poultry and eggs production. As per the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011, nitrofurans are banned in the production chain that may include the animal feed as well as final food products.
Compliance has been ensured via routine checks, surveillance along with laboratory testing.
“Detection of trace residues below the EMRL does not constitute a food safety violation nor does it imply any health risk,” said an FSSAI official.
The authority claimed that the country’s regulatory framework is in line with universal practices.
