Adding a pinch of sea salt to your water bottle can help in maintaining effective hydration and blood pressure levels in your body as sodium plays a key role in fluid balance. If you do not get adequate of it, you may face dehydration particularly after extensive workouts.
Terms like lemon water, alkaline water, chlorophyll water, and ginger water may have been common. However, did you ever hear salt with water? The debate surrounding salt has been going on for years. Some say that it may increase your blood pressure while others suggest several benefits for the human body. Recently, nutritionist Pooja Makhija took to her Instagram account and shared the benefits of mixing salt to water. She said that an excess of refined salt in processed foods may pose health risks and suggested the use of natural and mineral rich salt instead.
“Low sodium levels can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and even cognitive decline. A 2017 study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that low-sodium diets can actually increase stress hormones and insulin resistance,” added Pooja Makhija.
The nutritionist emphasised on swapping refined table salt with sea salt or pink salt. Sea salt is chiefly manufactured of sodium chloride, an essential compound that can effectively control fluid balance and blood pressure. As sea salt least processed, it can offer you vital minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, among others. It is probably the major reason why sea salt is often considered to be superior that table salt. Table salt lacks most of key nutrients due to being extensively ground.
Pooja said, “every time we pee, cry, or sweat, we are not just losing plain water, we are losing water along with essential electrolytes, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium. Therefore, we drink just plain water, we are not going to be able to get the full results. Therefore, there is dehydration, light headedness, muscular cramps, and fatigue. According to a study published by the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that adding electrolytes especially sodium helps us to absorb and retain this water and hydrate ourselves at a cellular level.”
She stressed on adding a pinch of mineral rich salt the next time you fill your bottle. It could be either pink salt, Himalayan salt or curry namak.
According to a healthline report, sea salt can offer you about 2300 mg of sodium if you take one teaspoon of it or 6.1 grams and 2000 mg of sodium per teaspoon or 4.2 grams.
Salt helps in maintain effective hydration and blood pressure levels in your body as sodium plays a key role in fluid balance. If you do not get adequate of it, you may face dehydration particularly after extensive workouts. Adequate fluid balance is essential for healthy blood pressure levels. Consumption either too less or too much sodium may cause changes in blood pressure for individuals sensitive to dietary salt. Sea salt can help in accomplishing your sodium requirements.
Drinking lukewarm water containing sea salt can support healthy digestion. However, moderation will always remain the key. Chloride helps in creating stomach acid and sodium chloride permits absorption and supply of vital nutrients to intestines after going through the breaks of breakdown during digestion process.
