Choose the processor based on your workload, not just the Core, Ryzen, M-series or Snapdragon name.
Look at the whole laptop, including RAM, GPU, cooling, display and battery life, because the processor does not work in isolation.
Avoid paying for performance you will not use. Identify your three heaviest apps or tasks and choose the processor family around them.
When I am buying a laptop, the processor is one of the first things I look at. But I do not simply go for the processor with the biggest number. I first think about what I will actually be doing on the laptop, because a processor that makes sense for gaming or heavy workloads may be unnecessary for everyday use.

Always check the complete processor name and generation. A Core Ultra 5 225H is not the same as a Core i5-1335U, even though both may appear in similarly priced laptops. The same applies to AMD. A newer Ryzen AI 7 should not automatically be considered equivalent to an older Ryzen 7 simply because both carry the number 7.
The same applies when you move beyond Intel and AMD. Apple uses its own M-series processors in MacBooks, while Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite are Arm-based processors used in Windows laptops. Their naming systems are different, so comparing them by a number such as 5, 7 or Elite does not tell you much on its own.
The letter at the end of a processor name can give you an idea of the laptop's intended performance and power consumption. Copilot+ becomes more relevant if you specifically want to use Windows' newer AI features or expect to use applications that make proper use of the NPU.
The processor name does not tell you exactly how it will perform in every laptop. Cooling, power limits and the laptop's chassis can all affect sustained performance. A Core Ultra 7 H in a thin laptop may not deliver the same sustained performance as the same processor in a thicker gaming laptop with a more capable cooling system and higher power limits.
If I am carrying the laptop around all day, I would pay more attention to the processor's power class. U-series Intel chips, efficient Ryzen AI processors, Snapdragon X and the M-series chips in the MacBook Air are better suited to laptops where battery life, heat and weight matter. H and HX processors, along with Apple's more powerful Pro-class chips, make more sense when I expect the laptop to handle demanding work for long periods.
I would also check how the laptop performs when it is unplugged. Some Windows laptops reduce performance on battery to conserve power, which can matter if I work during a commute or away from a charger. If I regularly travel with the laptop, I would check both battery life and unplugged performance before making a decision.
I would also think about how long I plan to keep the laptop. If it needs to last through four years of college, I would rather buy a current mid-range processor with 16GB RAM than save money on an older entry-level chip with 8GB.
The same applies to a MacBook. Make sure there is enough unified memory for the work you expect to do over the next few years. But I would not go overboard either. There is no reason to buy an HX processor or an M4 Max just for taking notes, attending classes and browsing.
Before comparing laptops, make a quick list of the three heaviest apps or tasks you use regularly. Use that list to narrow down the processor family you need. Once you have done that, compare the laptop's RAM, display, cooling, battery life and price.
This also gives you a natural opportunity to check the other parts of the laptop before you buy. For example, if you regularly carry it around, battery life matters more than another step up in processor tier. If you spend most of your time with dozens of browser tabs open, having enough RAM can matter more.
One thing I would avoid is paying for a processor you are unlikely to fully use. Pick the processor family around your actual workload, then choose the laptop that gets the rest of the package right.
The i5 comfort blanket: An i5-1335U from 2023 is not the same as a Core Ultra 5 225H. If a listing only says "i5" or "Ryzen 5," I would check the full model string before comparing it with another laptop.
Copilot+ as a performance upgrade: The 40+ TOPS NPU enables certain on-device Windows AI features. It does not mean the laptop will export 4K video faster. I would not pay extra for the badge unless I actually need those AI features.
