7 Habits That Can Heal Your Gut

1. Oil Pulling: She suggested to start the day with oil pulling. “Take one teaspoon sesame oil, swish it around your mouth for 5-10 months. It takes out all the unhealthy pathogens and bacteria out of your mouth.” You don’t have to swallow the oil but spit it out. Dimple said, “it is a 3000-years-old technique,” and one must definitely try it.

2. Tongue Scraping: The expert recommended, “One copper tongue cleaner, 10 strokes non-negotiable.” It pulls the ama, the toxins on the surface of your tongue. You spit it out rather than swallowing it back. The “Ama” (toxins) and white discoloration on your tongue is actually from undigested food overnight.

3. Sip 200 ml Of Warm Water: She recommended that it has to be warm water. Not cold water. not room temperature, and not chilled. Warm water improves peristalses (the downward- moving wind principle) that allows easy evacuation of waste, said Dimple Jangda. Warm water functions as a vasodilator that can stimulate gut motility, relaxe digestive muscles, and support the breakdown of food.

4. Triphala: The expert recommended to have triphala at bed time to train the colon or 5 black raisins soaked overnight in the morning. This again will help in improving “gut motility.” Gut motility is the automatic, coordinated contractions of the muscles within the gastrointestinal tract that mix, grind, and propel food via digestive system, from the esophagus to the rectum. “It allows easy evacuation of the waste out of your colon,” said the expert. You can also have 1-2 prune soaked overnight.

5. CCF Tea: There are several CCF tea benefits that can improve your health. Dimple Jangda asked to take “1 litre water, 2 teaspoons of cumin seeds, 2 teaspoons fennel seeds, and 2 teaspoons coriander seeds. Boil it lightly, sip this throughout the day, and chew the seeds. It improves your peristalses and stimulates the digestive juices.

CCF (Cumin, Coriander, Fennel) tea is a popular Ayurvedic, caffeine-free herbal brew that enhances digestion, brings down bloating, and supports detoxification. It strengthens digestive fire (Agni), breaks down stubborn toxins (ama), and calms inflammation in the digestive tract. It also supports your weight management and boosts mental clarity.

6. 10 Minutes of Sun Exposure: We are well aware of sun exposure morning benefits. The expert said, sun exposure stimulates your circadian rhythm which then controls your gut microbiome diversity, and also your cortisol rhythm. This also helps in reducing stress. Sun light is directly connected to your gut-brain axis that improves your gut health.

7. Mindful Eating: Dimple Jangda suggested to “sit down and eat your meal. No phone, no distractions, no standing up.” Sitting down and keeping your nervous system in resting mode helps your digest food better rather than in a fight-or-flight mode, concluded the expert.

FAQs

Q

How does oil pulling compare to other oral hygiene practices in Ayurveda?

A

Oil pulling, traditionally done with sesame or coconut oil for 5-10 minutes, uniquely removes harmful bacteria and toxins in the mouth, reducing plaque and gingivitis. Unlike routine brushing, it detoxifies by swishing oil, providing benefits like fresher breath and improved oral hygiene, making it a complementary Ayurvedic practice.

Q

What is the recommended way to implement tongue scraping in a morning routine?

A

Use a copper tongue cleaner to perform 10 gentle strokes across the tongue surface each morning before eating. This clears 'ama' or overnight toxins from undigested food, enhancing oral cleanliness and preventing the ingestion of toxins. Spit out residues instead of swallowing for best results.

Q

Can you explain the health benefits and preparation of CCF tea mentioned in the article?

A

CCF tea is made by lightly boiling 1 litre of water with 2 teaspoons each of cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds. Drinking it throughout the day and chewing the seeds supports digestive fire (Agni), reduces bloating, promotes detoxification, enhances gut motility, and aids weight management without caffeine.

Q

What is the cost or effort required to adopt these Ayurvedic morning habits for gut health?

A

These habits require minimal financial investment, mainly in natural ingredients like sesame oil, Triphala, and common herbs, along with tools like a copper tongue scraper. The daily time commitment is roughly 10-15 minutes, including oil pulling and mindful eating, representing a low-cost, high-ROI approach to improved digestion and overall wellness.

Q

Are these Ayurvedic practices safe for everyone, and is there scientific support for their effectiveness?

A

Generally, these Ayurvedic habits like oil pulling, tongue scraping, and sipping warm water are safe for most people and have traditional use spanning thousands of years. Some clinical studies support benefits like improved oral health and digestion. However, individuals with specific health conditions should consult healthcare providers before starting new routines.
