In the search for healthier and stronger hair, many people have begun to explore the benefits of ancient hair remedies that can prevent hair fall and boost growth. One such remedy that has gained immense popularity is rice water. Several people in Japan and China relied on this ancient remedy to grow their hair thicker and stronger.

How Rice Water Benefits Hair?

Rice water is an excellent source of amino acids, Vitamin B, E, and antioxidants that are essential for healthy tresses. It also contains a vital compound inositol that can repair damaged hair and enhance hair regeneration right at follicular level. The major role is played by inositol that can alleviate surface friction, repair the damage to hair shaft, and penetrates to protect hair from any further damage. The strength of inositol can be gauged from the fact that it has the capacity to awaken inactive follicles with proper massage into the scalp especially areas where hair stopped growing or thinned.

Rice water can also control inflammation. If bald patches occurred due to irritation on scalp or inflammation, the cooling properties of the water can lead to recovery.

Can The Water Help Bald Patches?

There is no scientific evidence yet to substantiate the claim. However, subjective evidence and use of the water since ancient time indicate that the water can enhance hair thickness, bring down hair fall, and may stimulate regrowth in bald patches.

According to a report in healthline, “fascinated by this hair treatment, scientists and beauty lovers alike have tried to find out if rice water can really beautify and strengthen hair. Studies have found that inositol, an ingredient found in rice water, is able to penetrate damaged hair and repair it from the inside out. It even protects hair from future damage.”

Quick Steps To Prepare Rice Water For Hair Regrowth

There are two different methods available to prepare rice water for regrowth. The first one is soaking method and second is fermentation.

Soaking Method

  • Rinse 1 bowl of uncooked rice to eliminate impurities

  • Soak the cleaned rice in 2-3 bowls of water for approximately 45 minutes

  • Strain the rice and keep the water to apply on your scalp

Fermentation Method

  • Rinse 1 bowl of uncooked rice to remove impurities

  • Soak the rice in 2-3 bowls of water. Allow the soaked rice water to stay at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours for fermentation

  • Strain the rice and store the rice water in a spray bottle

  • The benefit of second method is higher as fermented rice has increased antioxidants and inositol and the method will be more effective for hair regrowth

  • You may dilute fermented rice water with plain water in equal ratio to prevent any irritation in case of sensitive scalp

How To Use Rice Water?

  • You need to massage the rice water on your scalp focusing areas with less hair. It will help in stimulating blood flow and allow the nutrients to go deeper into follicles

  • Allow the rice water to stay in your scalp for 20- 30 minutes

  • Wash with plain water or you may just leave it on depending on the scalp’s sensitivity

  • You must ensure to use rice water for 2-3 times a week for better results as consistency will be the key
