OpenAI was earlier speculated to be working on AI-powered "SweetPea" earbuds, but a new report suggests that the company is working on a new smart speaker that would feature an in-built camera for facial recognition, similar to Apple's Face ID, along with a few other capabilities. Let us check out more about the product, including its launch timeline and price range.

OpenAI AI-powered Smart Speaker Details

Citing a report by The Information, Engadget states that OpenAI's yet-to-be-announced smart speaker with an in-built camera will come with facial recognition support that will let users authenticate purchases.

Additionally, the smart speaker will be able to identify nearby objects with the help of the in-built camera. Furthermore, the device will have the capability to detect conversations happening around it.

Notably, if these features turn out to be true, the smart speaker could be positioned beyond a typical voice assistant speaker.

OpenAI AI-powered Smart Speaker Launch Timeline, Price Range (Expected)

As per the report, the smart speaker is expected to arrive in markets by early 2027.

The report suggests that the OpenAI AI-powered smart speaker could launch between $200 (around Rs 18,177) and $300 (approx. Rs 27,266) for consumers.

Note that OpenAI hasn't revealed any details regarding this AI-powered smart speaker so far. The launch date, price, availability, and all the key features are yet to be revealed officially.

It is worth noting that the company has brought in former Apple designer Jony Ive to lead its hardware design efforts. His design firm, io Products, was acquired by the company in 2025 for $6.5 billion.

With more than 200 employees now working on its hardware division, OpenAI appears to be making a strong push into the consumer technology market.
