Here's How It Works

The upcoming snatch-detection feature uses multiple sensors and contextual signals to smartly figure out when the phone has been stolen and lock it down right away. Here’s the breakdown:

• Motion Detection (Accelerometer): The iPhone's built-in accelerometer picks up sudden, aggressive movements that feel like someone yanking the phone out of your hand.

• Apple Watch Proximity: It checks the distance from a paired Apple Watch. If the iPhone starts rapidly moving away from the Watch (which usually stays on the owner’s wrist), that strengthens the detection a lot.

• Context Awareness: To avoid false alarms, it also uses the same logic as Stolen Device Protection -- checking if the phone is connected to a familiar Wi-Fi network or is at a known location like home or work.

• Action Taken: If a snatch is confirmed in an unfamiliar location or network, the iPhone will lock itself immediately and apply the same advanced restrictions as Stolen Device Protection. This prevents changes to Apple ID, payment methods, and other sensitive settings.

The main goal is to stop a thief who knows your passcode from making critical changes to your Apple Account. It requires stronger authentication (Face ID or Touch ID) and adds time delays for sensitive actions.

How It Works

• Location-Based Activation: It activates stronger protections when the iPhone is at an unfamiliar location.

• Biometric Requirement: At unknown spots, sensitive actions need Face ID or Touch ID -- no passcode fallback.
