A large number of people suffer from dandruff as it impacts approximately 50% of world population, as observed by National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). There are several over the counter products available that promise to cure the issue. However, home remedies may just be as effective to find an effective solution to the issue. There are several factors that cause dandruff during winters that may include dry skin, washing hair with excessive hot water, seborrheic dermatitis (a non-contagious skin condition triggering flakes, grease, itchy patches) and sensitivity to hair products, among others. When dandruff is not treated, it may cause excessive hair fall as it tends to take a toll on hair follicles. Follicles can be explained as small openings that decide how hair will grow and fall.

During winters, there is need to balance the stress emanating from cold weather and central heating systems that may lead the scalp to overproduce oil thus making the hair appear greasy and non-shiny. Given below are some effective hair remedies that will help you cure dandruff during winters naturally:

 1. Tea tree oil: It has been extensively used to cure skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne. The oul may also contain antimicrobial and antifungal properties, that can significantly control and cure dandruff. According to a report featured in healthline.com, “a 2020 study of treating a skin pigmentation disorder found that applying placental tissue soaked in tea tree oil to the skin was more effective than a prescription antifungal treatment for healing lesions caused by the fungus Malassezia.” It is worth mentioning that tea tree oil may cause irritation to skin when it is not diluted. It is recommended to dilute it by adding some drops of jojoba or coconut oil before applying directly to the scalp.

2. Coconut hair oil: cold pressed coconut hair has the potential to nourish the scalp and remove dryness caused during winter months. Dry scalp leads to dandruff that will subsequently cause hair fall. Studies say that when you massage your scalp with cold-pressed coconut hair oil regularly, it will boost blood circulation and bring down hair fall.

Nutritionist Shweta Shah shares an effective hair potli in her Instragram video.a The ingredients of the hair potli are curry leaves, coconut flakes, methi seeds (fenugreek seeds), onion peel, and sendha namak. Mix all the ingredients and warm them in microwave for 2-3 minutes and apply warm on the scalp.

3. Neem Leaves: The leaves contain the required anti-fungal properties that can effectively fight dandruff triggering microbes on your scalp. When such microbes hit your scalp, it leads to fungal infection causing dry flakes. The Yoga Institute recommended using neem leaves, neem powder, and neem oil to find an effective cure for winter dandruff. Some people who are sensitive to neem leaves should conduct a scalp test before trying this solution.

4. Fenugreek Seeds: Methi or fenugreek seeds contain bioactive compounds that can lead to stronger hair growth. Methi seeds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and the much-needed anti-fungal properties that lead to better blood circulation and stimulate hair growth. It also helps in preventing dandruff and hair loss effectively.
